Eli Does Tom Brady One Better Off The Field, Too

Who says Tom Brady has the market cornered on being the NFL’s All-American kid?

News flash for Brady: your Super Bowl nemesis just one-upped you again.

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning, who led his team to victory over Brady’s New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, tied the knot over the weekend. He married longtime sweetheart Abby McGrew in a small and very private ceremony at the One & Only Palmilla resort in Mexico. About 40 guests attended.

But this wasn’t just a football player getting married. Eli’s nuptials were symbolic: championship quarterback marries college sweetheart after a one-year engagement. Compare this to Brady’s shenanigans: dumping actress Bridget Moynahan – who recently gave birth to his son! – for supermodel Gisele Bundchen. Messy, messy!

Ah, but Eli, the younger brother of fellow championship QB Peyton, proved that there are still some romantic types wearing jockstraps.

Eli and Abby met while both were students at Ole Miss, and Eli proposed a year ago March in Hoboken, NJ, where he lives. Hoboken? What superstar athlete gets engaged to his girl in Hoboken? Well, if that’s where you call home, then there’s no better place. A one-year engagement ended on the Mexican seaside, where the happy couple, under heavy security, exchanged vows under a canvas tent adorned in pink flowers while a live band waited to play. Peyton and another brother, Cooper, were the best men. Abby’s sisters shared maid-of-honor duties.

The wedding may have been small and intimate, but the gift registry clues you in as to the status of the bride and groom. The couple registered at Neiman Marcus and Williams-Sonoma, and the items included a $345 china vegetable dish, $90 champagne flutes, $280 sterling silver teaspoons, and a $240 two-slot toaster (and you STILL probably have to put the bread down twice for perfect browning). If you just can’t help but pick up something for the Mannings but your pocketbook is screaming, there’s always the $17 bread and butter dish.

Bottom line: Eli triumphed on the field, and as far as we’re concerned, he beat Brady again, this time in the game of life. Which QB puts the motion in your ocean more: the cherubic, stable guy who marries his college squeeze, as promised, or the devilishly handsome cad who’s clearly not above sprinkling his seeds all over the entertainment world? Besides, Brady lost the Super Bowl! That’s maybe the biggest sin – at least in New England.
