The NFL Draft: Glammed Up for Fun and Good Causes

When ESPN first started televising the NFL Draft back in 1980, critics compared it to “watching someone reading a telephone book.” The draft had been held in New York City since the mid-1960s, and never had there been any interest in watching it. How exciting could it be to see names being read over a P.A. system by some guy at a podium? And every 15-20 minutes, at that?
Fast forward to 2008. ESPN is about to bring us its 29th consecutive year of pick-to-pick coverage. The NFL Draft, nowadays, has taken on an almost Academy Awards-like aura. Pre-draft parties. Post-draft parties. Attention paid to what the draftees are wearing. Who’s showing up with who. About the only thing missing is the famous red carpet walk.

Fans in NFL cities today stream to their local team’s HQ for food, drink, a huge TV screen, and the right to jeer and cheer the players of choice. The teams themselves encourage this fraternizing, because none of them want to be known as the team that DOESN’T put on one of these soirees. There’s even tailgating that goes on, outside the stadiums, or wherever the HQ is.
Even players and their wives are in on the act, and that’s a good thing, because some worthy causes are being helped out in the process.
The draft is this Saturday and Sunday, and so we’d be remiss if we didn’t clue you in on what’s going on “outside the podium” this year.
